Question by xiren: Does plaster of Paris work in lost wax casting as investment?
I’m doing my first casting and so far I have a ring I carved from jewelers wax, a flask and flask base, everything’s sprued up, and Ive bought a ingot of casting pewter and all the tools to melt it. I was going to use plaster of Paris as the investment but I’ve been seeing mixed results with it and now im not sure. Ive decided to do the steam injection thing with just some wet cloth in a can pressed down over the flask and hopefully the steam should shoot the pewter through the mold.

plaster of Paris will work for low melting point pewter but unless it is completely dry (and perhaps warmed) it will chill the metal and prevent it from getting into all the corners. You are providing vents and forcing the metal in from the bottom?
This page http://www.princeaugust.ie/alloys/ has melting point and casting temperatures for a lot of metals and way down at the bottom indicates that 375C is the highest temp the “moulds” will stand which I take to be PoP which starts to break down – look elsewhere on that site for a clue, although even on this detailed site http://www.miniaturemolds.com/instruc_.htm it does not discuss preheating the molds.
I use regular investment (from Kerr) and aluminum or bronze and haven’t done pewter, but would suggest heating the mold to about 200C for pewter. my site http://www.mikegigi.com/castgobl.htm

Rapid Injection Mold Tooling

This program shows three different methods of making injection molds using various rapid prototyping techniques. The first example is epoxy tooling made from a stereolithography pattern that is used to mold 15 prototype parts in actual production material. The second example used the DTM process called RapidTool to make mold inserts capable of thousands of injection cycles. These RapidTool inserts were formed using powder metal in a Sinterstation. The powder metal inserts are infiltrated with co

A ME doesnt belong in a tool room in a plastic injection house.
If you cant find a job at a OEM and you have to be at the “squirt house” you can design better tools . Remember multiple cavities, flow of coolant and ejection methods.
Most Plastic houses use unskilled workers to operate the presses so you must out guess what they will do, ( or NOT do…). Otherwise the next day you will have a truckload of bad parts and lose money. My experience is that short shots and such are not detected by operators that are focused on quotas of parts. start slow. Learn from the experienced toolmakers..Good Luck

(1) I don’t know if this is one of your options, but I believe that “units produced” should be the answer for (E) Quality control and possibly (A).
(2) (3) Sorry, I can’t be any help with these two.
(4) I believe this question wasn’t clear (I’ve found it happens a lot). I think it was supposed to have read “Activity-based costing is most appropriate to use when DIRECT labor costs are a ?. In which case, the answer would be (A).
(5) I’m not sure about (A), but both B and C are true. This would mean that (D) is correct.
(6) A, B, and C, are all false, so (D) is correct

Good luck

Injection Mold Tooling

Question by areena666: What is the easiest and cheapest way to get tooling or moulds made for a short run production?
Our concept design for a new cap closure is nearly finished and we will soon have a few functioning prototypes shortly. However before we go into mass production we feel it will be best to pilot or market test our products to a group of people, our friends and also potential clients.

In order to do this I have been told it may be possible to go to a plastic injection firm and request a short run production..lets say 1000 – 5000 samples

However tooling may be needed….. soft tooling or hard steel tooling..
We are UK based and i have also been advised of not considering China as it is not exactly on our door step if something goes wrong..

Please advise:)

good point..i think i need to rephrase my question…

i have been told nowadays that any form of tooling or moulds can be built but the costs can raise from 1000 up to 100 000……

cheapest – by this i mean cost effective…it is only for samples etc not for mass production

so this for example could be a soft tool, like aluminium,

easiest – i mean by this, maybe there could be a a method I am not aware of…..a simple solution….
