Question by xiren: Does plaster of Paris work in lost wax casting as investment?
I’m doing my first casting and so far I have a ring I carved from jewelers wax, a flask and flask base, everything’s sprued up, and Ive bought a ingot of casting pewter and all the tools to melt it. I was going to use plaster of Paris as the investment but I’ve been seeing mixed results with it and now im not sure. Ive decided to do the steam injection thing with just some wet cloth in a can pressed down over the flask and hopefully the steam should shoot the pewter through the mold.

plaster of Paris will work for low melting point pewter but unless it is completely dry (and perhaps warmed) it will chill the metal and prevent it from getting into all the corners. You are providing vents and forcing the metal in from the bottom?
This page http://www.princeaugust.ie/alloys/ has melting point and casting temperatures for a lot of metals and way down at the bottom indicates that 375C is the highest temp the “moulds” will stand which I take to be PoP which starts to break down – look elsewhere on that site for a clue, although even on this detailed site http://www.miniaturemolds.com/instruc_.htm it does not discuss preheating the molds.
I use regular investment (from Kerr) and aluminum or bronze and haven’t done pewter, but would suggest heating the mold to about 200C for pewter. my site http://www.mikegigi.com/castgobl.htm

A ME doesnt belong in a tool room in a plastic injection house.
If you cant find a job at a OEM and you have to be at the “squirt house” you can design better tools . Remember multiple cavities, flow of coolant and ejection methods.
Most Plastic houses use unskilled workers to operate the presses so you must out guess what they will do, ( or NOT do…). Otherwise the next day you will have a truckload of bad parts and lose money. My experience is that short shots and such are not detected by operators that are focused on quotas of parts. start slow. Learn from the experienced toolmakers..Good Luck

You need to charge enought to cover your travel expenses and time. There are two ways you can do it.

One is to charge a lump sum and include it in the price of the job, either as part of the job or as a separate line item.

The other is to charge a lump sum and bill it separate from your job invoice (more bookkeeping that it’s worth).

You don’t say how big an area you serve, or how big your jobs are. If your jobs are small enough to be carried in a pick up, I would think that $ 1.50 per mile, up to 25 miles one way, with a minimu charge of $ 50.00 would be in line. For instance, if your pick up is 25 miles, one way, from your shop – 25 miles x 2 x $ 1.50 = $ 75.00. If the milage is such that it yields less that $ 50.00, then charge the minimum.

The regular pick up and delivery services set their rates according to zones that are generally 5 miles in diameter.
Zone A extends 5 miles from the center of operations, Zone B is from 5 to 10 miles, and so on.

Hope this helps.

Found plastic injection mold tooling in Combination or Permutation Question?

plastic injection mold tooling:

Injection Mold Tooling

Question by cupcake: Combination or Permutation Question?
Plastic parts produced by an injection-molding operation are checked for conformance to specifications. Each tool contains 12 cavities in which parts are produced, and these parts fall into a conveyor when the press opens. An inspector chooses 3 parts from among the 12 at random. Two cavities are affected by a temperature malfunction that results in parts that don’t conform to specifications.

a) what is the probability that the inspector finds exactly one nonconforming part?
b) what is the probability that the inspector finds at least one nonconforming part?

You don’t have to do the second part if you don’t want to. I can do it if someone shows me how to do part (a).
Thanks for any help

Best answer:

Answer by holdm
there are 12C3 = 220 ways for the inspector to pick 3 parts to check.
When exactly one of these three is bad: there are 2 ways to pick the bad part and 10C2 = 45 ways to pick good parts. 2*45/220 = 9/22

b) the probability that the inspector checks only good parts is 10C3/12C3 = 120/220 = 6/11
therefore the probability that he finds at least one bad is 1 – 6/11 = 5/11
