Question by Bucky: Injection molding tooling cost?
I am trying to determine the tooling cost for an injection mold. Item would be about 12″X12″X18″. Also if working with a manufacturer do I own the mold and are they specific to machine type so that it might be hard to move to another manufacturer? Any advice is apprecitated

Molds are a huge investment. Last time I was in the field (about 15 years ago) it ran about 5,000 USD for a prototype for a plastics. I believe for metal it is much higher. Make sure you discuss exact amounts and responsibilities for any rework that has to be done. Additional molds of the same or very similar items will be less expensive.
As far as who owns it, if they are doing all the molding, then they might expect the ownership of it. However if the design is strictly yours – shrug. You need to negotiate all these and go over contracts carefully before you sign.
It’s also very likely that you will NOT be able to use that mold with someone else’s equipment.
